Carroll Marcus Cooper , 92, of Richmond, Va., passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

Born in Memphis, Tenn. on July 4, 1925, Carroll was the son of Leroy and Chlorine Cooper of Memphis, Tenn.

He attended Central High School, but left his senior year to become an officer candidate in the Navy's V12 program. He fulfilled their bachelor degree requirements at Southwestern (now Rhodes College), and The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. He then joined the U.S. Navy V7 Military Training School, whose graduates became Commissioned Ensigns. Now, he would join his brother, Lee and become the Navy fighter pilot he desired. Soon, he was stationed in Pensacola Florida to complete his training. His service was from 1943 to 1945. When the war ended, he continued his education at the University of Virginia and graduated in the class of 1948. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and the university's golf team.

Carroll began his career with Welsh Plywood Company in Memphis, Tenn. He moved to Newport News, Va. in 1960, to open Hampton Hardwood Corporation, a lumber importing business. In 1978, he joined Virginia Federal Savings and Loan as a member of the Board of Directors. He was elected President in 1980 and later became CEO. He remained with Virginia Federal until his retirement in 1990.

Carroll married Cary Ann Randolph, of Richmond, Va., in 1949, and they had two children, who they raised in Newport News, Va. After Cary's death in 1984, Carroll married Catharine (Polly) Spessard Neblett of Richmond, Va., where they lived happily until his death.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cary Randolph Cooper; and his son, Carroll Marcus Cooper Jr.

He is survived by Polly, his loving wife of 34 years; his daughter, Peggy Cooper Fuller (Steve); his daughter-in-law, Jane; four stepchildren, Ann-Maguire, Kim, Val and Spess Neblett; six cherished grandchildren, Jack, Cary, Nathalie (Steve), Jane (Michael), Marcus (Keli) and Emily; and one beautiful and precious great-granddaughter, Alden.
