Their only child, Preston Joel, was born 24 May 1898. They were living in Plymouth, New Hampshire, where Abel was teaching at the State Normal School. From there they moved to Brooklyn. Preston became ill and died January 3, 1903, not yet five-years-old. In mid-January his remains were brought to Woodlawn Cemetery in Newfane for burial in the spring. Grace is the woman at the upper left in the accompanying scanned grouping from a larger group photo taken at the Cherrie's family farm in the summer of 1903. Preston Grout was the same age as Inez Cherrie, the little girl sitting in front of Preston's mother Grace; both were born in May, 1898.
For the rest of their lives, Abel and Grace continued to enjoy spending time, especially during the summer, on Newfane Hill.
As their health declined they became good friends with their physician, Dr. Carlos Otis, who started a practice in nearby Townshend in the late 1930s. They chose to be in Vermont under his care as Grace's situation became more critical. In February of 1947 they were at Newfane Hill rather than at their new winter home in Florida. Grace died 17 Feb 1947 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in Brattleboro, Vermont. Before Joel went to Florida alone after Grace's death, he bequeathed their Newfane Hill assets to enable Dr Otis and the rural communities up the West River to start their own hospital in Townshend.
Grace Cottage Hospital, named in honor of Grace Preston Grout opened in 1949. Now two decades into the 21st century, Grace Cottage is recognized nationally as a health care model, more than a hospital, an advanced medical center, created and served by the people and communities it serves.
Grace Grout's parents were Edward and Elmira Preston.
