At the age of 12, Mabel received Jesus Christ as her savior. In her teenage years, Mabel would take her father's horse and buggy to neighboring homes to give piano lessons.
On Aug. 16, 1924, Mabel was married to David Vernon St. John. To this union were born four children, Merna, Marlin, Harlin and Merlin.
David and Mabel built their first home from oak lumber out of trees they cut with an ax and a crosscut saw. This home was located near Hartville, and it still stands there today. Because her husband was a pastor, they began a series of moves that would take them from Hartville to Bolivar, Mo., and then to the towns of Urbana, South Greenfield, Schell City and finally to Golden City in 1952. While in Bolivar, Mabel took courses in piano at Southwest Baptist College. She would use her natural talents and this training to teach piano students in the towns where she and her husband, David lived.
After David's retirement, he and Mabel joined the First Baptist Church, of Golden City, where for a period of time, Mabel taught Sunday school and was also the church organist. She played the organ for worship services until her health caused her to be in the nursing home the last two months before her passing. In addition to teaching piano, Mabel did a considerable amount of custom sewing over the years.
Mabel enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, reading her Bible and attending church. She also loved to make hot rolls which were greatly enjoyed at church dinners.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Nellie Woody; her husband, David; and all of her children, Marlin, Merlin, Merna Smittle and Harlin.
She is survived by a son-in-law, Chester Smittle; a daughter-in-law, Lois St. John; five grandchildren, Carlin Smittle, Caren Rowland, Carlos Smittle, Kevin St. John and Royce St. John; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; and three nieces and their families.
She will be sadly missed by her family and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at Golden City First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Little Creek Cemetery in Hartville. Visitation will be Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m.
