American composer, songwriter and publisher. Received his law degree from Fordham but chose a career in the music industry rather than embark on a legal career. Musical arranger for Irving Aaronson and His Commanders as well as band leader Fred Waring. Collaborated with Irving Berlin and Bing Crosby. Composed a number of hit songs such as "Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day", "Mean to Me", "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" and his million seller, "I'll Get By". His songs have been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Paul McCartney, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Thelonious Monk, Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Waller, among others. Served as ASCAP director, 1933 - 1953 and ASCAP president, 1948 - 1950. Member of the Songwriters Protective Association, the Lambs and the Friars. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, 1970. Married Minnie Campbell in 1912 but the union did not last long. Later married Mildred Goldberg and had two sons.
