James Richard Briscoe was born on August 2, 1937 in Pampa, Texas and died on June 30, 2018, in Memphis, TN. He was predeceased by his parent, Charles Wraymond Briscoe, Jr. and Maxine Frances Cornelia Mingus Briscoe, and by his wife, Carole Macklin Briscoe to whom he was married for 38 years. He was a fifth-generation Texan on both sides of his family, the last direct descendent of John Benton Briscoe who came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin about 1830. Mr. Briscoe lived in Pampa, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana and moved with his parents to Houston, Texas where he graduated from Lamar High School and Rice University. He received a Masters of Business Administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Memphis, Tennessee after graduation, and worked for the National Cotton Council before joining Plough, Inc. (later Schering Plough Corp.) where he worked for 25 years. At Schering Plough, he held a number of executive positions including the President of the Plough Products Division. He then joined Winston Weber and Associates, where he was Senior Consultant working with companies primarily in the food and drug industries. He and his wife maintained a second home in Naples, Florida for many years. He is survived by his cousins, including Marilyn Mingus Wilson, Julia Mingus Lundgren and Gage Van Horn, M.D.; and godchildren Ellison Poe, Tony Poe, Bolin Evans, Moseby Evans, Ben Evans, Eric Lupfer, Murray Butler, and Phillip Carbo; special friends, Gayle Evans, Shirley and Michael Lupfer, Nancy and Rodgers Menzies, and Joshua Fowler, among others in the United States, Europe, and Australia. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Joan Macklin Cook and close friends Jimmy Evans, Gordon Bomar, Ferd Spangler, and Harry Solmson, III. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Memphis and Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples. He was a member of the University Club of Memphis and the Naples Yacht Club. He served on numerous boards of non-profits, including the National Ornamental Metal Museum and Theatre Memphis. He loved and was generous with his friends and others. His philanthropy is well known to many organizations here in Memphis. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral on Monday, July 9, with visitation at 1 p.m. followed by service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Briscoe asked that donations be made to the Metal Museum, Theatre Memphis, St. Mary's Cathedral, Trinity-by-the-Cove, or a charity of the donor's choice.
