Kenneth E. "Gene" Pennington, 93, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord from his home on July 3, 2018, after an extended illness.

He was the son of the late Luther L. and Letha Shuck Pennington. Gene was a WWII veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was a retired welder from Union Carbide.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; five brothers, Franklin, Ralph, Carl, Jessie, Robert; sisters, Irma Cicero, Reba Dunlap, and Elsie Nary.

He is survived by one brother, Loren, and sisters, Lorena Dunlap, Frankie McCune, Myrtle Stinett and Lula Bell McCutcheon. Left to cherish Gene's memory are his children, John (Camma), Karen Stout, Kathryn (Jerry) Vanduyn, Kenneth (Tracy) Pennington II, and two step daughters, Sharon Osborne and Karen Whitlock. Also, nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

In life, he enjoyed family and friends, camping, traveling, hunting and fishing.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, July 9, at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, with Speaker John McCune officiating. Burial will follow in the Pennington Cemetery, Loudendale. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to his caregivers, Dorlessa (Frap) Allen, Taquilla (Missy) Allen and Belinda Lawrence, also the staff of Hospice for making Gene's final days peaceful and loving.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.

A meal will be provided for the family immediately following the burial at the shelter on the family farm.
