DeWayne Bussell, 93, of North Loup passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018, atthe Westfield Quality Care in Aurora.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Scotia United Methodist Church. Reverend Bonnie Brock will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia. Military Honors will be presented at the graveside. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

DeWayne was born January 23, 1925, at the family farm in Greeley County to Darold and Esther (Nelsen) Bussell. He grew up in the Brayton area in Greeley County. He attended District 6286 and Logan schools. In 1939, the family moved to Scotia where he graduated from Scotia High School in 1943.

DeWayne stayed on the farm until he joined the US Army in 1945. He was inducted into Fort Riley, Kansas, and then went to Fort Bliss, Texas. DeWayne served his country during WWII in the Philippines. He was on a ship headed to Japan when the peace treaty was signed in 1945.
He was discharged in 1946.

DeWayne returned to the family farm in Scotia to resume farming and raised and showed purebred Hampshire hogs. DeWayne met Venetta Ann Roby at a local restaurant and they married August 7, 1949, and celebrated 59
years together.

The couple lived on a farm in the Lamartine area, later moving to a farm southwest of Scotia. Two daughters were born to this union, Sheryl and Carolyn.

In 1969 the family moved to North Loup and DeWayne began carpentry work. DeWayne recalled his uncle Kenneth Bussell’s carpentry tools in the attic which is what started it all. In 1972 DeWayne started his own
business. He was a meticulous carpenter, never taking a shortcut always striving to do the best job possible for those he was serving. Upon retiring he enjoyed remodeling his house and spent a great deal of time raising beautiful flowers and a large garden. He didn’t want his flowers cut because he wanted others to enjoy their beauty.

DeWayne loved music, playing the piano and trombone. He was active many years singing in the church choir. DeWayne sang for many weddings and funerals through the years. His grandchildren begged him to play the Boogie Woogie because he played it so loud and hard that everything sitting on top of the piano would shake and rattle. Grandma wasn’t
happy about that!

DeWayne joined the Scotia United Methodist Church in 1939 and was proud of his lifelong membership. He served on the church board and was a member of the American Legion Post 150 in Scotia. He was proud to march in many parades and represented the post at many Memorial Day observations.

DeWayne is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Rasmussen of Grand Island; grandchildren and their spouses, Steven and Jennifer Scott, Erin and Andy Marsh, Erica and Steve Long, TiLynn Scott, and Kelsey and Todd Clyne, all of Grand Island; great-grandchildren; McKenna Marsh, Gage Long, Grant Long, Colton Marsh, Maxton Long, Parker Scott, and Landon Clyne; and his siblings Phyllis Combe of Ogden, Utah; Berniece and Harold Reck of Chico, CA; and Jack Bussell of Leawood, KS; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Venetta; daughter and son-in-law Sheryl and David Scott, son-in-law Densel Rasmussen; sister-in-law Jeanie Bussell, brother-in-law Chuck Combe, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Illa and Jerry Holmes; and his parents and
parents-in-law.
