William Nimmo was from Mulloy's P.O. in Robertson County, Tennessee and was admitted to the U. S. Military Academy on July 1, 1845 at the age of seventeen years and six months. His father was Wilson C. Nimmo, also of Mulloy's P.O., whose occupation was listed as "school teaching" and his mother was Serena Stewart Nimmo. William graduated on July 1, 1849, standing tenth in a class of forty-three members and upon graduation was commissioned a Brevet Second Lieutenant, 4th Artillery. He served on frontier duty at Ringgold barracks, Texas in 1849; in Florida Hostilities against the Seminole Indians, 1850; was in garrison at East Pascagoula, Mississippi, and at Ft. Washington, Maryland from 1850-53. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant of the 4th Artillery on April 30, 1850. He married Cora Morbry of Maryland on January 6, 1852.
He was transferred to Ft. Independence, Massachusetts and served there from 1853-54 and later Ft. Brown, Texas, 1854-55 and Ringgold, Texas, 1855. He was on sick leave of absence from 1855-56 when he died of pneumonia at the age of 28 years.
