Richard K. Bliss, 81, died Thursday, Nov. 27, in Sedona, Ariz. A memorial reception will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames.
Richard K. Bliss, a homebuilder in Ames for nearly 40 years, former Ames City Councilman and NCAA All-American shot putter, lived in Ames until 1986 and retired to Sedona. He was married to Pat Lounsbury Bliss, the author of "Christian Peterson Remembered," from 1951 until her death in 2002. He married Mary Ann Wilcox Bliss in October 2003.
He was a three-sport, Des Moines Register/IDPA all-state athlete in football, basketball and track at Ames High School. He was state champion in the shot put in 1940 and school record holder at Ames High for 10 years. In 1993, he was inducted into the Ames High Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a multi-year letterman and member of Iowa State's football, basketball and track teams from 1941 to 1944, and was also an NCAA All-American shot putter at ISU in 1944. At ISU, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and member of the Knights of St. Patrick honorary engineering fraternity. After graduating under an accelerated engineering program at ISU in 1944, he was employed as an industrial engineer by Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle until 1947. Founder of Bliss Construction Company and Broadmoor Development Company in Ames, he was a custom home designer-builder and developer for 37 years and was elected as president of the Ames Home Builders Association in 1976. More than 200 Bliss Built custom homes and commercial buildings were constructed in Ames from 1947 to 1985. he was elected as an Ames city councilman in the late 1950s. He was a life member of the ISU Alumni Association and a founding partner in Green Hills Development Corporation, builders of Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames, now owned by ISU. He also was a founder of Ames Community Swim Club, decade-long volunteer swimming official for Ames High boys' and girls' swimming teams, lifelong golfer at Ames Golf and Country Club and an avid walleye fisherman. In Sedona, He was a past president of the Orchards Homeowners Association and long time volunteer set builder at the Sedona Arts Center. He was an 18-year member of the Oak Creek Golf club. Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Wilcox Bliss, of Sedona; son Tom Bliss and granddaughters Laura and Carolyn Bliss of Phoenix; daughter Janet Haman and granddaughters Karen and Patty Haman of Huxley; and daughter Susan Bliss of Eugene, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Lounsbury Bliss; his father, Ralph K. Bliss, long time director of Ag extension at Iowa State; his mother Ethyl McKinley Bliss; and brothers Dr. William R. Bliss of Ames and Robert M. Bliss of Des Moines.
