He was the son of John W. Chapman and Mary Lucinda Chaney who were born in Barren and Hart County, Kentucky. John and Mary moved to Cooke County, Texas sometime in the late 1880's. Then to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory in the 1890's. They were living in Greer County, Oklahoma at the time of the 1910 census and in Linn County, Missouri at the time of the 1920 census. Mary died between 1910-1920. I have not found a death date or location for either Mary or John.

James Buck Chapman was married first to Sarah Logsdon who bore him six children. Sometime in 1898-1897 James left his family in Kentucky and went to Cooke County, Texas where he married Jessie Barnes in December 1897.

James was last found living in Riley County, Kansas in 1930. I suspect that is where he died but don't know for sure.
