Bill was born to parents George W. and Jean V. Ambrose on March 21, 1953 in Augusta, GA. He grew up as the eldest of three and attended Shepherdstown High School. Out of high school, he served in the Air National Guard. He then attended Shepherd College where he made many lifelong friends through his fraternity, Theta Xi. He was an alumni of both the fraternity and the college and cherished the friendships formed. He relocated to Louisiana in 1979 with the VA Hospital, but always considered West Virginia his home.
He worked for the VA Hospital for over 30 years and retired as a Director of Recreational Therapy and Supervisor of Voluntary Services. His passion was for his patients and the volunteers that made their lives brighter. There were many times that you would find him taking the patients fishing or even having them over to his home for a cookout. He loved to grill and his smoked briskets grew very popular among his friends. He often smoked them for friends and their families as a kind gesture during the holidays.
During his tenure at the VA, Bill was always active in many activities beyond his true responsibilities in Recreational Therapy. He played on the VA Softball Team and, for many years, was even a National Official of the Golden Age Games.
Bill had two daughters that he adored more than anything, but also had many neighborhood children over the years that he built strong relationships with. He was an outdoorsman and made many memories by taking anyone who would accompany him hunting, fishing, and water skiing. He grew to enjoy playing golf as well, and even his hip replacement did not keep him off of the golf course. He possessed a very dry sense of humor and quick wit that he shared with anyone that he encountered. He also loved football. For many years, he even had multiple televisions in the living room so that he could watch more than one game simultaneously. His favorite team was the Washington Redskins.
Bill was active in his community and was a past Member of the Exchange Club in Alexandria, a past Member of The Krewe of Boogaloo, a past Member and President of the Kiwanis Club in Tioga, and a current Member of the Kiwanis Club in Shepherdstown, WV.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Laurie Attaway and Virginia Eschete; his sisters, Sharon Lynne Whittington and Sheila Cogan; four grandchildren, Layla, Jerome, Bella, and Emelia (who will be born in May); two nephews, Scott Alan and Shanen; a niece, Shaina; and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Jean.
A visitation will take place at Kramer's Funeral Home on February 4, 2017 beginning at 10AM with a Memorial Service immediately following at 1PM, with Rev. Don Thompson officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
