Politician. The daughter of a university professor and a member of the Republican Party, she broke into politics when she became the first Republican woman to be elected to the Philadelphia City Council. She then went on to serve as the 3rd Special Assistant to the President for Consumer Affairs (1969 to 1971) under President Richard Nixon and the 1st Director of the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs (1971 to 1977) under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford and again under President Ronald Reagan (1981 to 1989). During her tenure, she promoted recycling and nutritional labeling, unit pricing of groceries, and other consumer-friendly features. She died of congestive heart failure at the age of 96.
