Electrical engineer, technical designer, social reformer and author. Son of Alexander M. and Malajka (Jelenkiewicz) Alexander. Educated in Austria with studies in mechanics, metallurgy and electrical engineering. Emigrated to the U.S. to work for Westinghouse from 1894 to 1899. Briefly went to work for Siemens Electric before General Electric hired him as chief engineer and chief designer from 1900 to 1918. While with G.E., he created the company's Education and Personnel Department in Lynn, Massachusetts and established a partnership between G.E. and M.I.T. providing apprenticeships and company courses for new graduates. Served on the Old Age Pension Commission of Massachusetts as well as the Massachusetts Workman's Compensation Commission. Early participant in the National Bureau of Economic Research. Co-founder and first president of The National Industrial Conference Board, known today by its shortened name, The Conference Board.
