He married Elizabeth Dowdy, daughter of Robert Dowdy and Catherine Whitmire. He and Elizabeth had three sons and five daughters. He had a lumber mill that he operated with his son John Robert Pesnell around Bell's Mill. He also was a justice of the peace in Alabama. He outlived his eldest son by two years, the son was murdered on his way to court to testify in a lawsuit against the business.
