JAMES MAYFIELD, 1784 - 1855
James Mayfield son of Micajah Sr. and Ann (Catesby?) Mayfield, was born in 1784 near Louisville, in Jefferson County, Kentucky and died September 22, 1855 near Pleasantville, in Sullivan County, Indiana at age 71 years, 5 months and 25 days. He is buried in the United Methodist Church Cemetery at Pleasantville. He was married to Amelia "Millie" Hinkle, daughter of Wendel and Elizabeth Fox Hinkle, on May 27, 1813 at Louisville, in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Amelia was born May 1, 1793 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky and died on October 7, 1868 in the Pleasantville Township area of Sullivan County, Indiana.
His father, Micajah Mayfield Sr., for several years before his death in 1838, is reported to have been living with him in Sullivan County, Indiana. The house where they lived is located less than 100 yards from Micajah Mayfield's grave site in the United Methodist Church Cemetery, he died there in 1838. This house has been added to and fixed up over the years but is still standing.
This James Mayfield is shown in the Jefferson County, Kentucky Tax Lists for the years 1799-1801, in close association with Micajah Mayfield. As per the tax records, this James Mayfield was not a land owner. This man is probably the same James Mayfield who gave his written consent for his daughter, Eleanor Mayfield to marry John Sharp in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The consent statement, dated 05 July 1799 and of which I have a copy, is filed with the marriage bond packet at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Louisville. A record of the marriage may also be found in Jefferson County, Kentucky Marriage Book 1, page 33.
