Retired Trooper James “Jim” D. Hindman passed away at home on Friday, July 20, 2018 after a three year battle against cancer.
Jim was born June 24, 1942 in Marion, Ohio to Otis and Dorothy (Altenberger) Hindman. He was the youngest of 10 children.
He graduated from Marion Harding High School with the class of 1960. Upon graduation, Jim joined the United States Navy. During that time he served a 13 month tour in Vietnam. After his discharge from the Navy, Jim went to The Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, graduating with the 81st class. He was stationed at Post 70 in Mansfield as a Trooper ending his time at District Headquarters in Bucyrus as an investigator. Jim was the first to receive the ACE award at the Mansfield Post for recovery of stolen vehicles. After retirement, Jim worked for Job & Family Services as a fraud investigator.
Jim was a member of First English Lutheran Church as well as the Baku Grotto, Venus Lodge #152 F&AM, the Kentucky Colonels, Mystic Golf League and the Ohio Retired Troopers Association. He enjoyed playing softball for the FOP and officiating football, baseball and softball. Jim could be found fly fishing, often taking his wife, Vanessa, to many out of the way streams, salmon fishing in Oscoda, Michigan with great friends or golfing, having gotten a hole in one at Twin Lakes Golf Course.
Jim was a big man, with a heart to match, who believed in honesty, integrity and commitment. Family was a very important part of Jim’s life, especially his grandchildren, who he loved dearly. He enjoyed attending their sporting events from flag football, lacrosse and basketball to Marietta College Football. He was their biggest “vocal” fan. He also enjoyed following high school baseball, especially the Madison Rams.
You could find Jim laughing with the “Breakfast Guys” just about every day of the week.
Lifelong friends and memories that were made at Post 70 throughout the years were very special to Jim and his family including Christmas parties, softball games and gatherings at Doc’s Barn.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr’s. Viswanathan, Detrich, Ballinger, Ohio Health Infusion, Ohio Health Hospice and their staff for the care and compassion shown to Jim.
He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Vanessa (Jocha) Hindman; their children, Melissa (LeRoy) Smith and Lance (Michelle) Hindman; grandchildren, Alex Smith, Alexis Smith and Katherine Hindman; brothers, Carl (the late Dorothy) Hindman and Floyd (Karen) Hindman; sister-in-law, Cara (Brad) Schmitt; brother-in-law, Joseph (Marsha) Marsetti; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Russell and Blanche Jocha; brothers, Sam (Rusty), Dick (Veda) and Larry (Virginia); sisters, Beulah (Bud) Bond, Margie (Paul) Reiff, Carol (Paul) Lichtenberger and Martha (Claude) Curren; and sister-in-law, Vivian (Floyd) Hindman.
Friends may call from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2018 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 South Diamond Street, Mansfield where Masonic services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2018 at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Paul L. Lintern. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Friendly House.
