Albert Leo D'Elia of Boulder died of natural causes on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002 in Louisville. He was 88.
He was born May 10, 1914, in New London, CT to Nunzio D'Elia and Teresina Avena D'Elia. He married Leah Richards on June 30, 1947, in Steubenville, Ohio. She died in 1978.
Mr. D'Elia received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Carolina in Bomance languages and a Master of arts degree from University of North Carolina in linguistics and modern languages.
He was in the army from July 1942 to November 1945, serving in the 849th Signal Intelligence Service in Italy and Africa, enciphering a deciphering Army intelligence messages during World War ll.
Mr. D'Elia was a professor of Romance languages at the College of Steubenville and at the University of Colorado. In 1952 he changed careers and became a master barber, owning Al's Barbershop on University Hill. He retired in 1977.
He moved to Boulder County in 1949.

He volunteered for the Hospice of Boulder County in its early years after the death of his wife. He also volunteered for the Boulder Valley Schools Teen Parent Program for 17 years and a Toddlers playground was named "Grandpa Al D'Elia's Playground.
As a friend, husband, brother, father and grandfather, he touched many lives and will be forever missed.
Internment will be in New London, CT
