U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Rhen David Belz, age 29, went home to be with his Lord on Feb. 6, 2018, in Little Rock, Ark. Rhen was born in Anchorage, Alaska, on April 11, 1988, to Frederick Belz and Donna Petrie Belz. He graduated, in 2006, from Chugiak High, attended University of Alaska Anchorage and worked at Anchorage House of Hobbies prior to joining the Air Force in April 2009. While stationed in Little Rock he met and married his bride, Melaina VanMeter Belz, in 2010.
Rhen enjoyed reading, video games, RC cars and planes, computers and especially cars. He loved tinkering on vehicles and was the guy to call if you needed help on your car or computer. During his teen years his favorite winter pastime was going snow machining with his dad at Eureka, Hatcher Pass or Willow, Alaska. He loved God, his family, friends and his kitties. He thought of Alaska as home and always hoped to return.
Rhen was with the 19th Maintenance Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base, where he served for almost nine years with the Air Force. He was an Iraqi Freedom Veteran. As a valued member of the Air Force Rhen was respected and admired by many for his integrity, generosity and willingness to help anyone who asked.
Rhen was a Christian and lived his life as an example to others. Because he was a caring and giving person, his generosity continued even after death by the donation of his organs and tissue which improved or saved many lives. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Melaina Belz; father and stepmother, Frederick and Annette Belz; mother, Donna Petrie; brother, James Belz and wife Candy; sister, Linda Johnson and husband Matthew; stepsister, Nicole Bowman and husband Stephen; stepsister, Lori Montgomery and family; and Arkansas in-laws, Carol and Scott Campbell, Jerry and Kimberly VanMeter, Melanie VanMeter Lawson and Jarrett VanMeter.
Rhen was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul and Allen Belz; and fraternal grandparents, Eleanor and Edward Belz.
Funeral service and interment will be held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery on May 7, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Rhen's name be made to AFSP (afsp.org) or to Alley Cat Allies (alleycat.org).
