Seattle Mayor. He served two terms as mayor of Seattle, Washington, from 1882 to 1884. He was a charter member of the Rainier Club and the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, and also served as a regent of the University of Washington and judge advocate general of the Washington Territory. Struve arrived in the United States from Germany at the age of 16, becoming active in law, journalism and mining interests. He was admitted to the Washington State Bar Association in 1959, eventually setting up a private law practice in Seattle. He was the former owner of the "Vancouver Chronicle" and the "Puget Sound Daily Courier" newspapers. As mayor of Seattle, he oversaw half a million dollars in civic improvements, including the grading of public streets and organizing the city's cable car system. He died unexpectedly, following a short illness, while on a business trip to New York.
