LaVerne was born on January 20, 1927 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Edward and Agnes (Benishek) Hessel. She was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1945. On June 6, 1953 she married Norbert Ewen at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2007. LaVerne was a lifelong member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek, where she served as a sacristan. She had a passion for photography and dogs. LaVerne enjoyed tennis , baseball and the outdoors. She especially enjoyed spending time on the family farm riding her horses.
Survivors include three daughters: Leah Gay, Kim Ewen, Gay Ewen-Bieberitz, all of Manitowoc; two sons and daughters-in-law: Tim & Ann Ewen, Manitowoc, Todd & Ilina Ewen, Raleigh, N.C.; nine grandchildren: Nicole (Chad) Boeder, Sturtevant, Lana (Jeremy) Stradal, Branch, Angela Gay, Atlanta, GA., Austin (Constance) Gay, Fayetteville, AR., Adrian (Amanda) Gay, Reedsville, Atley (Kayla) Gay, Brillion, Denin Bieberitz, Minneapolis, MN., Maria Bieberitz, Manitowoc, Dakota Ewen, Manitowoc, Carter Ewen, Raleigh, NC., Neal Ewen, Raleigh, NC; three step grandchildren: Adam (Jessica) Krepline, Eagle River, Lucas Krepline, Manitowoc, Heidi (Thomas) Jacobs, Manitowoc; seven great grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was also preceded in death by a daughter: Beth Ewen; one sister and brother-in-law: Ivy & Edward Menchal; and one brother and sister-in-law: Sylvan & Marie Hessel.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2018 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Jeffrey Briones with entombment at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc.
The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek, from 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2018 until 10:45 a.m.
