MAYETTA -- Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church west of Mayetta for Peter C. Aitkens, 77, Mayetta, who died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at a Topeka care center.
He was born on May 19, 1925, on the Potawatomi Reservation near Mayetta, to Jim and Blanche Aitkens. He was a farmer and rancher and lived in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana before he returned to the Mayetta community. He recently had worked in maintenance for Harrah's Prairie Band Casino near Mayetta.
He was a member of the Citizens Band of the Potawatomi Tribe. He had served in the Army and Marines.
He married Arlene Eagle Rascon on May 3, 1958, in Holton. They were divorced.
Survivors include two sons, Aaron Louis Aitkens, Mayetta, and Maurice Aitkens, Circleville; a daughter, Sylvia Matlock, Topeka; a sister, Julia LaClair, Holton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Shipshee Cemetery west of Mayetta. Mr. Aitkens will lie in state until 3:30 p.m. today at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. A wake service will follow a rosary at 7 p.m. today at the parish hall next to the church west of Mayetta.
