Youngest and 7th son (and 9th child) of Rev. Joseph T. and Fannie May (Wood) Baker, "J.T." lived much of his life in multiple places within VA, MD, DE, and PA, early on with his family, his father being an itinerate Baptist tent-meeting revivalist preacher. He played guitar, and at one time owned an antique Martin guitar, later learning the art/skill of lute making and building at least one guitar. Working in various occupations throughout his life, at one time he, along with his older brother, Joe, drove a semi transporting cars from the GM Plant in northern Delaware and later become one of its safety officers.
