Harvey Black was born in 1827 in northeastern Ohio, in Trumbull County to Dr. Samuel Black and Louisiana Holliday. His father was a Tennessee native and his mother too, was born in Trumbull County, Ohio. When Harvey was a teenager, the Black family initially relocated to Allen County, Ohio by 1840 and then shortly after to Kalida, Ohio living south of town, on the south side of Hog Creek (Ottawa River).

After the death of his father in 1848, Harvey became the man of the house at the age of 21, helping his mother with his six younger siblings.

Sadly, Harvey Black passed away at the home of his mother, a year after his father's death, on March 17th, 1849, at the age of 22 years old. He is buried here with his parents.

Harvey's obituary includes a quote by John Milton, an English poet. Harvey's is the first located obituary to include a literary reference such as a quote, poem, or hymn.
