Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow for Miss Dorothy A. Doerr, 84, of 540 Protzman Rd., retire Butler teacher, who died suddenly at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the emergency room of Butler Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
Miss Doerr had taught Latin at Butler High School for over 40 years until her retirement in 1965, and served as advisor to the Latin Club. Following retirement she made her home at DelRay Beach and Boca Raton, Fla., where she taught at the Harris School for Girls, DelRay Beach.
After returning to Butler she had resided with her sister-in-law, Mrs. J. Paul Doerr of Protzman Road, since May 1984.
In 1965, she was one of two graduates of Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, to receive the first Alumni Achievement Awards from the university's Alumnae Association, for "achievement to society beyond profession and service to community and church."
A 1921 graduate of Butler High School, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Capital in 1926, and her Master's degree from Ohio State University in 1940.
Miss Doerr served on the University's Board of Regents for many years, beginning in 1954, including the board which selected Capital's 10th president, Thomas H. Langevin. She was also the first woman to serve on the Alumni Association's board of directors.
She was names to Who's Who in America in 1968.
In addition to her regular classroom teaching, the Butler High teacher made valuable contributions to education through her volunteer work.
For at least 20 years she taught a class in vocabulary development, first meeting in the homes of her young pupils and then in her home, after the close of the regular summer school session. She also taught a post high school course in effective study and rapid reading to improve the skills of college-bound students.
Her advanced Latin classes met Sunday afternoons during January and February to read Greek plays. Miss Doerr is also especially remembered for the Christmas vacation reunion she held for her Virgil Classes for over 25 years, at which she entertained her current advanced Latin students and former pupils home from college over the holidays.
During the summer of 1964, Dorothy Doerr organized a group of 11 Butler High students for study abroad in Austria, under auspices of the Foreign Language League, and later took a group to Europe for study.
She also assisted at the Butler Hospital giving tests sponsored by the National League of Nursing, to girls wanting to enter that profession - tests which attracted girls from a 100-mile radius of Butler.
As a member of the Butler Branch, American Association of University Women, she was chairman of the committee which suggested the name chosen for Emily Brittain School in Butler.
Born in Butler, Oct. 26, 1902, Dorothy Doerr was the daughter of George and Lillian Keefer Doerr.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she served as chairman of the Volunteer Ministry of the Church; and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Surviving are a brother, Ralph Doerr of Butler; a sister, Mrs. Sidney (Margaret) TenCate of Orange City, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

DOERR-Friends of Miss Dorothy A. Doerr, of 540 Protzman Rd., who died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1987, will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday from the funeral home, with the Rev. William Range, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Thompson-Miller.
