Fern was born to John and Emma (Sillman) Barker on Jan. 12, 1922, at Mitchell. She attended school at Sunflower until 1938 when the family moved from the farm into Mitchell. She then continued her education at Mitchell High School.
Fern married Reuben Barthuly on Nov. 4, 1939, at Harrisburg. They worked on farms and at Great Western Sugar Co. for several years. In 1947 they moved back to Mitchell to manage a service station, which they purchased, retiring in 1978. In her later years Fern enjoyed the company of her friends at the Mitchell Senior Center, playing pinochle and dining together. Her life was devoted to taking care of her husband and family. She was very artistic in her crafting and in decorating the many cakes enjoyed by the family on special occasions.
