Dr. Milton Hughes was reunited with his true love, Gloria, at 8:45 pm Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at his home in Denham Springs, surrounded by his family. Dr. Hughes was born in Livingston on March 13, 1935. He graduated from Doyle High School in 1952 and was the point guard on 2 state championship basketball teams. Following graduation, he attended Southeastern Louisiana University before receiving his DDS degree from Loyola University in 1959. After serving in the U.S. Navy for 2 years, he returned to Denham Springs and opened his dental office on Hummell Street where he practiced for 48 years - he retired in 2007. In addition to his practice, Dr. Hughes served on the Livingston Parish School Board for 44 years – he was the longest serving school board member in Louisiana. Everyone who knew Dr. Hughes knew that he loved his community, and he was inducted into the Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a Supporter in 2014. He also served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Denham Springs for many years.

Dr. Hughes is survived by his son, 21st Judicial District Court Judge Doug Hughes and his wife, Anna; his daughter, 21st Judicial District Court Judge Charlotte Foster and her husband, Larry; and his daughter Joan Smith, Nurse Practitioner and her friend, Harold Laird. His grandchildren were his pride and joy – Mary Beth & Sam Hughes, Katie & Andrew Herbert, Lillie & Annie Smith, Chase, Brennan & Lauren Foster. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Whitehead and her husband, Gerald, and brother Dr. David Hughes and his wife, Sheree.

Dr. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gloria Grantham Hughes, his parents, Willie Sharp Hughes and Lillie Miller Hughes, his brother, Willie S. Hughes, Jr. and his son-in-law, Mike Herbert.

Visitation will be at First Baptist Church in Denham Springs on Friday, August 10, 2018 from 5-8 pm and continue on Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 10 am -12 pm. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Dr. Milton Hughes will be held at Noon on Saturday. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park in Denham Springs.
