John Stockton was born December 24, 1798 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of David and Ann Stockton. He was reared on a farm in Ross County, Ohio. During the War of 1812 he served under Col. Henry Brush, escorting troops and supplies through the Black Swamp to Detroit. After the war, he located in Mount Clemens, Macomb County, Michigan where he was appointed County Clerk and Register of Deeds. He also served as U.S. Postmaster at Mount Clemens from 1821-1825. During the Civil War, Col. Stockton raised and trained the Eighth Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in Mount Clemens. After the war, he lived the remainder of his life in Mount Clemens, where he died on November 14, 1878.

In 1816, John Stockton married Mary Allen, a step-daughter of Christian Clemens.
