This Revolutionary War Graveyard was the original meeting site of Hopewell Presbyterian Church, organized in 1785 as the first church in Jefferson County. The graveyard contains the remains of early citizens, such as the Inman Brothers, and Revolutionary War veterans.

Joseph's father, Robert Hamilton, was born ca. 1720 in County Down, Ireland. He left a will dated 25 Mar 1786 in Rockbridge Co., VA. He named his wife, Margaret and his son, Joseph in his will.

Joseph's mother, Margaret McKee was born ca. 1724 in Ireland and died ca. 1789 in Kerr's Creek, Rockbridge Co., VA. After her husband, Robert Hamilton's death, she married 2nd James Gardner.

With the records below regarding the State of Franklin in Tennessee, it's extremely hard to discern the difference, if any, between this Joseph Hamilton and Col. Alexander Outlaw's son-in-law Joseph Hamilton, who supposedly died 2 Jul 1834 at his home in Morristown, Hamblen Co., TN. Alexander supposedly built the home "Rural Mount" for his daughter and son-in-law in 1799, and it's now on the National Historic Register. There's less than 20 miles from the Hamblen Co., TN to Jefferson Co., TN. Joseph Hamilton left a Will in 1834 in Jefferson Co. TN.

Most of the records used in genealogy are what the informant perceived, i.e. names and dates on tombstones, Bible records, census records, military draft cards, etc. Many times they are wrong, but one would be wise to use them to further research.

In Greene Co., TN on 19 May 1788, Joseph married 1st Penelope Smith Outlaw, who was born 27 Oct 1774 and died 19 Mar 1815. Her parents were Revolutionary War soldier, Col. Alexander Outlaw and Penelope Smith. Their first child was Alexander Outlaw Hamilton, born 10 Mar 1790, died 29 May 1794 and was probably buried in this cemetery.

Joseph is known as Col. Joseph Hamilton. In the ca. 1785 records of the historic State of Franklin in Tennessee, Joseph Hamilton was one of the attorneys admitted to practice law. His future father-in-law, Alexander Outlaw qualified as a magistrate.

In 1785 the Franklin government formed two new counties out of the territory then embraced in Greene County. One of these was named Caswell. Its limits are not known, but it undoubtedly extended as far west as the junction of the French Broad and Holston (Rivers),and included the greater part of the present Jefferson County. About all that is known concerning its transactions is that Joseph Hamilton was elected clerk of the county court.
