John Barnes, Jr. , son of John and Lula Mae Geer Barnes, passed away on January 11, 2004 after a full life of over 80 years. John was born in Trent, Texas on November 20, 1923. He married his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth Collum Barnes, on October 25, 1942 in Sweetwater, Texas.
John joined the United States Navy on February 23, 1943 and served "for the duration" of World War II. He was a Motor Machinist Mate 2nd Class and served on the USS Thomas. He was honorably discharged from service in October 1945.
John was the father of two sons, John Wesley Barnes and Steven Ralph Barnes; the grandfather of two granddaughters; and the great grandfather of two great grandsons. He is survived by sisters Frances Baxter, Bette Sue Hamner, Lavora Bishop, and Edna Bergstrom. He was preceded in passing by Steven Ralph Barnes and by sisters Ola Mae Payne and Patricia Keith.
John was employed by PPG from 1948 to his retirement in 1979. He was a Union Steward for the Atomic and Chemical Workers Union AFL-CIO. After retirement he energetically pursued his hobbies of gardening and "treasure hunting" and was an active member of the Exploration and Metal Detecting Society of Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church.
Visitation and viewing will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at the Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. A memorial service will be held at the Parkway Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be given to the American Cancer Society and the Parkway Presbyterian church.
But those who hope in the LORD will renew their STRENGTH. They will SOAR on wings like eagles; They will RUN and not grow weary, They will WALK and not be faint. Isiah 40:31
