Newspaper excerpts from the Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, May 25, 1898:
William J. Lake of Hillsdale, Helt Township, died quite suddenly on last Thursday night. He was an old soldier of the late war, having served in Co. E. of the 149th Indiana Volunteers. He was here on Wednesday, the day before his death, and examined for increase of pension by the Newport Pension Board. He had been afflicted for many years with heart disease, which was the cause of his death. The medical board realized his condition and were very careful for fear he would die while undergoing the examination. He was about 70 years of age, and was a brother of Rev. Israel Lake. He leaves a widow. The funeral occurred on Saturday last, his remains being interred in the Trowbridge Cemetery.
Hillsdale
Samuel Lake of near Marmer City, IL, was at Hillsdale last Saturday. He was here to attend the funeral of his brother Jack.
