Mary was the last in a long line of the Cron family that were born at Bucklerhole farm, Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire, Scotland [Born 6 pm on 5 July 1866]- the family had farmed Bucklerhole for 4 generations.

Mary & her family left Bucklerhole sometime between 1871 & 1881 - moving to Lancashire looking for work.

This was the era of The Clearings as the Lairds & Land holding Gentry were clearing the highland estates of small farms (crofts) to make way for the more profitable large sheep runs. The people that were forced off the land went down to the lowlands or England to find work or emigrated, some going to Australia, Canada, New Zealand & USA.

Married William Britch in 1892 & they had four children: Billy; Florence; Nell & Janet.

Mary also had an illegitimate son James Percival T Cron born 21 July 1890 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire [baptised 9 June 1891 in Latchford, Cheshire] - no trace of William after this date - presumed adopted & possibly transported to Canada ?

William & Mary also had an adopted son Frank Royle Green b. 14 Jan 1894 in Knutsford, Cheshire - Frank's biological mother Vanda Green was a friend of Mary and had emigrated to India without Frank.
