HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Abigail M. Pine, 98, formerly of Wood Park Lane, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vt.

Born in Petersburgh on Feb. 23, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo and Allettia Littlefield Strait. She attended schools in Petersburgh, Berlin and Hoosick Falls, graduating from Hoosick Falls High School in 1927. She took a teacher’s training class in Hoosick Falls in 1928. She received a certification in early childhood education from Temple University in Philadephia, Pa. She traveled throughout Europe observing educational systems.

She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in West Hoosick and also in Hoosick. From 1952 to 1972, she taught first grade in the Brittonkill School District before retiring in 1972. She held a life membership in the National PTA and also was a former member of the Hoosick Grange, holding a 25-year membership.

She was a former member of the Green Mountain Red Cross and served as as a volunteer since 1972 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, both in Bennington. She was a member of the Hoosick Falls Senior Center, formerly serving as vice president and chairwoman of social services.

She was a former member of the Rensselaer County Home Bureau, holding the offices of vice president and secretary, and served as a delegate to the National Convention held in Washington, D.C. in 1938.

She was a member of the West Hoosick Baptist Church since 1930, serving as trustee, Sunday school teacher and former member of the choir. She was a former member of the Bennington Bowling League and member of the senior alumni of the Hoosick Falls High School.

Abigail was the widow of the late Raymond Pine, who died in 1970, mother of the late Hugh Pine of West Hoosick, and is survived by four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

A graveside interment of ashes service will be held Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at the West Hoosick Cemetery, with Pastor David Beales of the West Hoosick Baptist Church officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the West Hoosick Baptist Church or to the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad.
