Ray Ashby, 73, of 917 S Market St, Marion, died at 3:40am Wednesday, at Marion Memorial Hospital following a 2 year illness.

Mr Ashby was a retired Chef and World War l Veteran having served in France with the Coast Guard.
He was reportedly one of the first three Americans to set foot in France during the War.

He belonged to the WIlliamson Post of the American Legion, Heyde-Pillow Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and First Baptist Church of Zeigler.

He was born in Williamson County on July 4, 1894 to the late William B and Bertha Jones Ashby.

He married Rosa Rotramel, who died on Feb 16, 1946.
He married Mrs Wreathel Corder on Oct 23, 1947.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Besides his wife, Mr Ashby leaves a sister, Mrs Jeffie Bohan of Dickinson, TX
Step-sons, Dr Ed L and Bill Corder, both of Marion; five step-grandchildren.

Burial in Masonic Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton.
