Gregory Abbott
Gregory G. Abbott, 66, of Ottumwa, died at 5:22 p.m. August 16 2018 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born July 20, 1952 in Fort Leonard Wood, MO to Gene and Betty Taylor Abbott. He married Nancy Cogdill and they later divorced. He married Elaina Janice Rysdam on May 18, 2013 in Bloomfield.

A 1970 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Gregory was a graduate of Indian Hills Community College with a degree in computer science. Gregory was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having been the last draftee from the state of Iowa during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany.

He was a hardware specialist for G.E. His passion was cooking for Boston Garden and many other places but most importantly for his family. He was the seafood manager at Walmart and later an associate, retiring in 2015.

He was an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America, the youngest at the time and received 3 Palms, Order of the Arrow and was chief of Bo Qui Lodge. He was also a member of Izaak Walton League. Gregory coached Little League baseball and youth basketball. He was a strong supporter of Nancy's softball league, being named the "Bleacher Creature". He was a water safety instructor at Camp Wapello, Forest Lake Camp, YMCA and the Beach at the Lagoon. He had a green belt in Taekwondo.

Surviving is his wife, Elaina; children, Sarra Abbott (Christopher Hodgkins) of Oskaloosa, Aaron Abbott of Minneapolis, MN, Trinity Behrends of Colorado, Michael Strawhacker and Madison Strawhacker both of Ottumwa; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his mother, Betty Abbott-Crumes of Ottumwa; a sister, Sandra Abbott of Cambridge, MA and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene; step-father, Louis Crumes and grandparents.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Hemmings officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Cremation will follow the services.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
Memorials may be made to the family.
