LaVonne June Swart died Thursday June 7, 2018, at Rice Memorial Hospital while surrounded by her family.
Visitation will be Friday, June 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Raymond from 5pm to 8pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16 at 11 am at the First United Methodist Church in Raymond.
LaVonne June (Johnson) Swart was born on the family farm in Woods Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota on July 29, 1934, to Harold C. and Mabel M. (Armstrong) Johnson. She attended high school in Raymond and was Valedictorian of the 1952 graduating class. During her youth she was active in 4-H and the Methodist youth group.
After graduation Vonnie, as she was known to most family and friends, worked for a brief time at JC Penney and at the State Hospital in Willmar. On August 12, 1955, she married Kenneth W. Swart at the First United Methodist Church in Raymond. They made their home on the Swart family farm in Holland Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota for the better part of 60 years until they both transitioned to an apartment in Raymond and later to the Clara City Care Center.
The farm meant everything to Vonnie. Over the years she became an avid gardener and through the University of Minnesota Extension Office she became a Master Gardener and served for 36 years. She specialized in herbs but knew something about every type of gardening. She was relied upon as a resource by many, participated in radio shows, and wrote many horticulture articles for the West Central Daily Tribune. Gardening was her passion in life. Vonnie was also a woman of faith and was a devout Christian. In October of 2017 she embarked on her 6th complete reading of the Bible, always seeking to learn new insights. Throughout her lifetime she was very involved in the First United Methodist Church. Teaching others, directing the church choir, and playing the piano were among the many things that she did while leading at the church. She was an inspiration to many and was loved by all. In her spare time Vonnie was also an expert seamstress, she knit numerous afghans for friends and family, she baked wedding cakes, served as an election judge, worked countless hours at the Kandiyohi County Fair, and served for over 12 years on the Renville School Board. Vonnie was also known as a constitutional conservative and to show support for our Second Amendment rights she received her Concealed Carry permit at the age of 78. Her life was as wide as it was deep.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ken, Son Greg Swart, Daughter Gail Swart (Deb Jones), Daughter Geraldine Swart, Son Brad (Heidi) Swart and Son Chris (Sharry) Swart. She is also survived by her Sister Valerie Jaenisch and Sisters-in-law Eunice Johnson and Verna Sabin. Vonnie is also survived by three grandchildren, Samantha (Jared) Pawelk, Benjamin (Hannah) Swart, and Lesley Swart. Left to her memory are numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sister Allene Hookom and her husband Kenneth, Brother Allen Johnson and his wife Mary, Sister Arlys Molenaar and her husband Melvin, Brother Daryl Johnson, and Brothers-in-law John Jaenisch and Donald Sabin.
In lieu of gifts to the family, donations to Raymond Fire and Rescue, and Central Minnesota Christian Schools Building Fund would be appreciated.
