Most of his early years were spent in Utah. In 1962 he and Olen bought a 10 acre farm in Oakdale, California and grew everything from yams to peanuts. He loved to farm which was evident by the neat orchards and fields he kept. He worked the farm for fourteen years before selling it and retiring.

After retiring he and Olen spent summers at Clark's Camp at Strawberry Reservoir in Utah and fished from his 21 foot cabin cruiser "The Mary Ann" which he had purchased from Philo and Pem Farnsworth (Olen's sister).
