Thomas was a participant in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1807 and drew lot 176 in District 15 in Baldwin County, Georgia. In 1817, he owned land in Morgan County, Georgia. In 1822, he bought 202 acres in Newton County and sometime before 1828, Thomas and Keziah moved there, settling near the Yellow River about ten miles from Covington.

He was listed as a Lieutenant in the Georgia Militia in Newton County on January 3, 1828. Thomas was a soldier in the Indian war during the years 1835-1836.

The following account was published in "Randolph County Memoirs of Georgia", Vol. I, in 1908:
"Thomas and Keziah Stanford, were early settlers of middle Georgia. The latter lived for many years there, and had born to them a large family of children. Later in life they removed to Newton county and settled near Yellow River about ten miles from Covington, where they resided until coming to Randolph county about 1828. They purchased a farm about seven miles from Cuthbert, where the senior Stanford died in August, 1839---well advanced in years. After his death his widow removed to Alabama, where her last days were spent."
