William was the son of Shelton J. Tranum and Sarah (Starrett) Tranum. He had an identical twin brother named Samuel Lewis Tranum, who died on 22 Sep 1907 in Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana. William and Samuel traveled to California in 1850 during the gold rush. Samuel married Sarah Jane Barney in California and later moved to Montana, but William returned to Henderson County, Illinois in 1852, where he married Mary Routzong. Interestingly, Mary was also a twin. She had a twin brother named Andrew Leroy Routzong.
William enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 in Iowa. He was seriously injured during a battle near Bolivar, Tennessee. He was discharged from the Union Army and returned to Rock Island, Illinois where he died on December 10, 1863. He was survived by his wife Mary and their three children. Mary received a widow's pension and moved to St. Louis, Missouri. She later moved to Chicago, Illinois and lived with her son Louis. She died in 1906 in Chicago, Illinois.
It has not been confirmed that William's grave is in this cemetery. His father-in-law's grave is in this cemetery. Many of the headstones in this cemetery have been vandalized and the cemetery has not been maintained for many years.
