Virgie was born on March 8, 1926 in Reedsville, to the late Arno and Pena (Moede) Bartel. She graduated from New Holstein High School in 1943. On October 30, 1948, she married George A. Mathes by Rev. Worthman at St. Peter's UCC, Kiel. He preceded her in death on December 8, 2006. During their marriage, they fostered over 150 children over 24 years together beginning in 1960. Virgie worked at Gocclots Five and Dime Store, and Leverenz Shoe Company. She enjoyed crafts, especially making Christmas ornaments. Virgie was a member at St. Peter's UCC and the Women's Guild in Kiel and St. John's UCC. She looked forward to spending time with her family, her face would light up when her great-grandchildren would visit with her.
She is survived by her children: Gary L. (Marsha) Mathes of Mound, MN; Jerome G. (Peggy) Mathes of Sheboygan Falls; Tammy M. Clark (Fiance, Gary Aspen) of Menominee, MI; Jay D. Mathes of Kiel; Jill (Mark) Hogstrom of Beaver Dam; Wanda Kunstmann of Two Rivers; and Cheryl Eiesser of Sheboygan; her grandchildren: Michael Mathes, Shawn (Monica) Mathes, Chad (Abraca) Mathes, Dillon Clark (Pam Ruggles), Garrett Clark, Brittany Clark, John Kinsmann, Laura Faldy, and many foster grandchildren; her 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren Virgie is further survived by her special friends, Gibby and Marion Dedering; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Virgie is preceded in death by her husband, George; her son, Don (Cindy) Mathes, her 2 daughters, Judith Polster and Donna Diener; her granddaughter, Denise Rohr; and her sisters: Pearl (Ed) Heinrich, Lois (Merlin)Wiesner, and sister-in-law, Bernice Wiesner.
Funeral Services will take place Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home (815 6th St., Kiel) with Rev. Michael Safford-Kennedy officiating. Cremation will follow and burial will take place at Kiel City Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the funeral home from 11:30 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm.
