Richard Neil Quast, 87 of Fairfax, Virginia passed on peacefully at his home on July 7, 2018, following a short illness. He will be sadly missed.
A memorial celebration service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church in Burke, Virginia.
Richard was born on September 13, 1930, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to Arthur R. and Lorraine M. (Steffen) Quast. He graduated from North High School in 1949 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture/Soil Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956.
In 1952, while in college and during the Korean War, Richard, volunteered for the United States Navy where he proudly served on the USS Oak Hill as it tested the first hydrogen bomb in the South Pacific.
Upon graduation he took a job with the Standard Fruit Company working in Retalhuleu, Guatemala; La Ceiba, Honduras; and Ecuador. In 1963, he left the company to establish Hemco and later Remote Sensing Engineering, two agricultural consulting companies, that assisted farmers with, crop management through aerial photography techniques and soil testing. On November 23, 1957 he married Luaine Bender of Cleveland, Wisconsin with whom he had two daughters. He lived and raised his family in Guatemala. During this time, Richard became a multi-engine private pilot and flew a Cessna and Aero Commander for his work. By 1984, when unrest in Central America adversely affected Richard's business and his marriage dissolved, he relocated to Fairfax, Virginia where he pursued consulting opportunities, renewed his boyhood passion for sailing and woodworking, and pursued studies relating to science and religion. On September 9, 1990, Richard married Judy Usherson at their home in Fairfax.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; his daughters, Ann Bie (Ross Hart) of Florida and Cynthia Ormson (Mark) of Indiana; grandchildren Kristian (Katie), Alex (Sandy), and Casey Bie, Anne Ormson and Laura Ormson Hoag (Michael), four great-grandchildren: Walker, Sawyer, Mariana, and Harrison; his brother, Arthur Quast (Pearl) of Arizona; and his sister, Mary Gallimore of Sheboygan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Costa, his ex-wife, Luaine Bender, and his parents.
