Governor of Rhode Island. In 1826, he with brother Amos D. Smith, arrived in Providence, Rhode Island, formed A.D. & J.Y. Smith Mills and became the leading textile investors in Rhode Island. James was active politically and was the Mayor of Providence from 1855 to 1857. In 1862, he was elected as a Republician the Twenty-ninth Governor of Rhode Island serving until 1866. After his term, he founded the James Y. Smith Manufacturing Company and remained in manfacturing until his death.
