Helen (Artis) Nickel, 82, of Eureka, a former lab technician and teacher, died May 16, 1989, in Eureka. She was a daughter of Irwin and Amelia B. (Springer) Artis. She married Dr. Frank W. Nickel Sr. on Nov. 24, 1932, in Peoria. He died in 1957.

She was a graduate of Illinois State University. Helen was previously a school teacher in East Peoria and had been a lab technician at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.

Helen was a Baptist and a member of the ENK Club, 4-G Club, both of Eureka, and the Woodford County Farm Bureau. She was a former member of the Eureka Women's Club and Home Extension.

She was preceded in death by a step-grandson (1LT Irving Shoemaker Chenoweth) and a brother, William.

Survivors include one son, Bill, Fern Park, FL; a step-son, Frank Nickel Jr., Eureka; two step-daughters, Dorothy Westphal, Eureka, and Mary E. Parker, Lake Bloomington; a brother, Paul Artis, Milwaukee; a sister, Dorothy Artis, Cincinnati; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
