Mathies Slatten was one of the first settlers in "Village of the Rising Sun" in Pierce Co. Wisconsin, arriving in 1852 following the Rev E. L. Clausen. Where he was from the time he arrived in the US in 1847 and his settling here is unknown at this time.

A detailed record of his years there can be found in the book
"The Lefse and Lutefisk Belt: A History of the Village and Township of Martell, 1840-1920 By Patricia Wiff.

He married Berthina Thoen on the 7 Nov. 1855, daughter of another early settler, Ole Hanson Thoen. We have not found a record of the marriage at the county level either in Pierce Co., WI or the neighboring Counties. He an Berthina are considered a married couple by their Lutheran Church in Martel. In his Civil War Pension papers he states that they were married Nov. 7, 1855 in St. Croix, St. Crois, MI.

Although he had never had any formal education in the United States, he helped organize one of the first Schools and was elected Treasurer of the district.

It is interesting to note that Mathias must have educated himself in the English language as he signed documents and a example of his beautiful handwriting may be found on his Civil War Pension application.

Even with a young family he served in the Civil War, Co. I 38th Wisconsin being discharged in 1865. Several of his and Berthina children died of diphtheria during the time of the Civil war. Some of their names are not known.

For reasons unknown, Mathias moved his family to Erhards Grove, Minnesota the summer of 1871 and signed the petition to set of School Dist. #17 on in that town 25 Nov 1871.
"History of The Township of Erhards Grove, Otter Tail County Minnesota and its Earliest Settlers" has history of his years there.

In late 1900 Mathias and Bethina went to Velva, No. Dakota where their sons Martin and Alfred had applied for Homestead Land. Both of them died there, Berthina in 1901 and Mathias in 1902.
Mathias came to America from Gullorsleetn Farm, Biri, Oppland, Norway and had the first deed recorded in Pierce Co., WI Entry # 1.

He married Berthe (Bertha) Olesdatter Thoen on 7 Nov. 1855, daughter of another early settler, Ole Thoen. We have not found a record of the marriage at the county level either in Pierce Co., WI or the neighboring Counties. He an Berthe are considered a married couple by their Lutheran Church in Martell. In his Civil War Pension papers he states that they were married Nov. 7, 1855 in St. Croisx, St. Crois, MI.

Although he had never had any formal education in the United States, he helped organize one of the first Schools in both Martell and Erhards Grove so he must have felt that education was very important. He was elected Treasurer of the Martell School district, a post that he served in for several years.

It is interesting to note that Matthias must have educated himself in the English language or learned English prior to his immigration as he signed all documents and a example of his beautiful handwriting may be found on his Civil War Pension Application and later census records state that both he and Bertha can read and write but in the History of Erhards Grove it states that he did not have any schooling.

Even with a young family he served in the Civil War, Co. I 38th Wisconsin being discharged in 1865. 3 of his and Berthnia's children died of Diphtheria during the time of the Civil war. Some of their names are not known.

It appeared that things were going well in Martell, the children attending school, Mathias and Berthnia were active in the Lutheran Church and he was an active member and Treasurer of the School Board, but for for reasons unknown, Mathias moved his family by wagon to to Erhard s Grove, Minnesota arriving in the summer.

From the history of Erhards Grove:
To Erhards Grove Twp came another sturdy family from the Norse countries of Europe in 1871, and they were none other than Mr. and Mrs Mattias Slatten. He was born at Berepresthjill, Norway November, 7, 1829. Mrs Slatten was born at Modom, Norway. The two had no schooling whatsoever, but knew nature as it propped out of the forests in the birds, and the fish ou to fht clear trickling water in the streams, and the sun, moon, and stars overhead.
Mr. Slatten as a boy did a lot of fishing and to watch the cattle up in the mountains in the summer time, and hunt and shop wood in the winter time. He was a man of great physique. He married Bertha Thoen in 1853. They emigrated first to Illinois where they lived two years. While adventure was still prime in their lives, and not too big a family , they moved to Rush River, WI, where they bought a farm and lived until 1871., when the call to go still farther into the Wild West dawned upon them. Yes, and this time it was Otter Tail County. They homesteaded 160 acres, the N.W. !/4 of Sec. 4, Erhard s Grove.

In late 1900 Mathias and Berthina went to Velva, No. Dakota where their sons Martin and Alfred had applied for Homestead Land. It was there that they both died and are buried.
Berthe died in 1901 and Mathias in 1902.
