Havasu News Herald:

"Scotty Ray Broadston, of Lake Havasu City, died on June 5, 1970, after the helicopter he was riding was shot down by enemy gunners in in the Binh Dinh Province in south central Vietnam. He was 19.

“I don’t know much,” Scotty’s cousin, Michael Broadston, said Wednesday when reached by phone. “I do know Scotty was drafted and was in Vietnam for a very short time and was returned to us in pieces.”

Michael Broadston said the family held a military funeral for Scotty when his remains returned stateside. He is buried at a cemetery in the Phoenix area. Scotty’s parents, Leonard and Lena May Broadston, have both died.

“I just remember playing in the backyard (with Scotty), he seemed to be a great guy,” Michael Broadston said. “I remember he had a great dog… a boxer.”

Scotty Broadston was a specialist fourth class with the 119th Assault Helicopter Company. His helicopter was tasked with supporting a combat assault along a highway about 10 miles west of the town of An Nonh, according to the combat unit’s history.

As the UH-1H helicopter approached a landing zone, enemies gunners killed the two pilots, and the helicopter crashed into a stream. The crash also killed four infantrymen. A single crew member survived.

“Scotty was a great young man who was loved and respected by all of us who served with him,” Jim Saufley wrote on Broadston’s remembrance wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website. “He has been thought of often over the years and dearly missed. He was a gentle man and deserved a better fate.”"

Scotty, I just want to say, I'm sorry, you volunteering to fill, in for me, while I went to the dentist. I was sleeping off, the sedative, when I was awaken, by our platoon sergeant and informed, of your downing. I went to the wall, years ago and said Hi, to you and WO., DONALD JAMES LUNDEQUAM and WO., RALPH ROUSELL, your pilots, that were shot down with, on June 5th, 1970. Just a Note, PFC., Comes, did make it out ,with wounds to his leg. A nice service, was held for you guys, but I was so full of guilt, I refused to attend. The old man sent MP., to get me and I stood, in the back off the room, under guard. I have not seen PFC., Comes, but I have met Lundequam's, younger sister and she is, much like him. In hindsight, I'm glad I attended, the services, I do, miss you all, travel well.

Three men of the 119th Assault Helicopter Company were killed when their UH-1H HUEY (hull number 68-16354) was shot down:

WO1 Ralph S. Roussell, Jr., Aircraft Commander
WO1 Donald James Lundequam, Co-pilot
SP4 Scotty Ray Broadston, Crew chief

The 119th unit history states that

"Today was a sad day for the Gators as they have lost friends as well as fine aviators. Gator 354 was shot down by enemy gunners and along with her she took the lives of WO Rousell, WO Lundequam, SP4 Broadston, and four soldiers from the 1/14 Infantry. The only survivor of the crash was PFC Comes, who was floundering in the water after attempting to help WO Lundequam, who had already perished. PFC Comes was fished out by WO Oliver's (pilot of another HUEY) quick to react crew chief and gunner, SP4 Almon and SP4 Bottom respectively. SP4 Almon attempted to rescue an injured and badly burned victim who was under (Editor's note: next word doesn't make sense) cerntainable, but the effort was in vain as the victim drifted in the blazing wreckage. During his attempt, SP4 Almon lost his footing and went under almost on the verge of drowning. WO Kelly jumped out of the aircraft and retrieved SP Almon. Those injured were medevaced to An Khe and the area was secured."
