An 1850 Cholera Victim - SPARKS, Noah -- abt. 1815-1850
Belleville, IL Republican dated Wednesday, June 5, 1850: We understand that Mr. Noah Sparks, of Ridge Prairie, in this county, died of cholera on Friday morning last. He had, we are informed, been to St. Louis with a wagon load of produce a day or two previous, where it is probable, he was subjected to much exposure and fatigue, and returned home with the diarrhors on him. On Thursday he was in the city till late in the afternoon, when he returned, and was immediately seized with a severe attach, which proved fatal in a few hours. This is the first and only case within this county that we have heard of this season, and as this solitary one was contracted in St. Louis, under the existing circumstances, we are not to infer that there will be a continuance of the malady. Belleville never was known to be more healthy at this season of the year than it is now; -- so far there does not seem to be the least likelihood of a re-visitation of cholera this season, if due caution is observed. Since the quarantine has been in successful operation there has been but very few cases in St. Louis, and those, with one or two exceptions, were transient persons.
