Pietro travelled to New York on the ship SS Mendoza aged 16 with maternal uncle Antonino Battaglia aged 29 (married to Antonia) and a friend from the same village Antonio Condello aged 31 (married to Lucia), (both subsequently returned to Terreti). He was processed through Ellis Island on 4 May, 1912 and was recorded incorrectly as Pietro Ozezzolo, his correct name at birth was Pietro Arezzolo. He initially lived at 685 Ferry Street, Niagara Falls, NY.

In the State of Ohio Death Index his last name was recorded incorrectly as Arrezzolo. Peter worked as a coal miner and died of an internal haemorrhage from injuries sustained in a mine collapse. He was 23 years of age. He was single. His Death Certificate states his mother's name as unknown (her name was Francesca Battaglia) and incorrectly states his father's name as Peter instead of Paolo.

At his date of death he was survived by his parents Paolo Arezzolo and Francesca Battaglia (married 18 November 1894 in Terreti) and his brother Rosario Arezzolo (my grandfather) and a baby sister Carmela.

His only remaining sibling still living, is his sister Francesca (born six years after his death in 1925 ) lives in Condura, Reggio Calabria, Italy. She has two children.

The list of the children of Paolo Arezzolo and Francesca Battaglia is:
Pietro 8/2/1896 - 3/10/1919
Rosario 27/5/1901 - 17/1/1981
Antonia 20/1/1906 - 15/9/1906
Francesco 5/12/1907 - 5/3/1909
Maria 30/1/1913 - 11/7/1913
Paolo 29/6/1914 - 2/11/1916
Carmela 25/12/1918 - 20/4/1920
Carmela 17/11/1921 - 18/10/1922
Francesca - living

Francesca Arezzolo who is still living told me in 2018 that her mother had 13 children with 10 dying in infancy but some may not have been registered as they may have been stillborn as they were not normally registered.

Pietro's brother Rosario married Maria Bagnato on 16/6/1923 in Terreti and they had 10 children (5 dying in infancy, although my grandmother told me she had 11 children and 6 dying in infancy) their daughter Teresa Arezzolo (deceased) and their three sons Paolo, Pietro and Carmelo Arezzolo immigrated to Australia in the 1950's and 1960's and reside there with their families.

Rosario and Maria's children who died in infancy were:
Francesca 25/1/1925 - 19/7/1925
Paola 16/11/1929 - 30/1/1932
Pietro 6/1/1935 - 21/12/1935
Domenico d.o.b. ? - 9/7/1937
Domenico 5/11/1938 - 9.8.1939
If a baby died before being baptised its birth was not recorded so my great grandmother's and grandmother's claims of 13 and 11 children born to them would be correct.

Rosario and Maria's other daughter Santa Arezzolo and her family reside in Italy.

Contributed by Maria Arezzolo daughter of Paolo Arezzolo, Australia and great niece of Pietro Arezzolo.
