Lawrence “Bud” Graves, 81, passed away on September 4, 2018

Lawrence “Bud” Graves led a life that would make anyone proud. He dedicated his life to public service, becoming a firefighter at the age of 18 and rising to the position of Assistant Fire Chief of the Louisville Fire Department.

After 35 accomplished years, he retired and moved from fire suppression to fire prevention for the city of Louisville, spending another 10 years protecting our community.

And for years, he volunteered for organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul, and helped various Catholic parishes in the Archdiocese of Louisville in many capacities.

But it was his dedication to his family and his beloved wife of 60 years, Carole, which defined him. He was a truly great man, and his selfless devotion was apparent to all who were lucky to have known him.

Bud’s four children were the light of his life, as were his seven grandchildren. He was always there for them, as a mentor; a shoulder to cry on; a handyman on a project; a ride for a daughter to her favorite boy band; listening to the fire radio scanner while his son was on duty; or a fan at one of their ball games.

And in his younger years as a father, he worked 2 or 3 jobs, to make sure his family had everything they could need, and allow Carole to raise his family. Bud was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes.

Bud was a native of Germantown and a graduate of St. Xavier High School and Ahrens Trade School. He was preceded in death by his daughter Jill; his parents Joseph Graves and Ruth Klehm; and his grandparents Lawrence and Helen Klehm.

He is survived by his wife Carole; three daughters, Gina Kaufman (Lance), Laura Graves (Erick Hill), and Alison Shea (Brien); and his son, Ryan Graves (Leah), himself a major in the Louisville Fire Department. Bud is also survived by his sisters Joan Brown, Sheila Ramsey, and Diana York; and his seven grandchildren – Hunter Kaufman; Matthew, Joseph, Anna, and Sarah Graves; Ashlyn and Dylan Shea.

Bud’s funeral service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi, 1960 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40205 on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11 am, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1600 Newburg Rd, Louisville, KY 40205. Visitation will be held at Bosse Funeral Home, 1355 Ellison Ave,
