For some years before their deaths, Melissa and L. W. lived on the corner of Franklin and Columbus Streets in a large frame house that no longer stands.
Melissa was a "housekeeper" and a fastidious one at that. According to her granddaughter, Mabel Hughes, "she was so prissy she couldn't make a bed without changing her apron."
Her first cousin, Louise Buffkin White, said that her children were always dressed in the nicest clothes and remembers she always felt like the country cousin when she visited.
