Son of John H Ferguson and Mary "Polly" Whitaker Ferguson Morris, John's father died before or shortly after his birth. His mother married widower Levi Morris in 1860 and John H Ferguson was raised in the Levi Morris household on farms in Shiawassee County MI and Neosho, KS. Census takers in 1860 and 1870 erroneously listed him as John H Morris. Although his mother died in 1877 when he was 18 or 19 years old, John continued to live with stepfather Levi Morris until his marriage. John became a carpenter and married Scottish immigrant Ella Galloway on 14 Apr 1886. Their daughter Valeria was born in Michigan in 1890.
Ella filed for divorce in 1897 but no final decree was entered at that time, the couple remained together in the 1910 census. In 1911, John moved to Nogales, Arizona where he lived to age 77. His daughter married Newton Mercer in California in 1913 . From 1914, Valeria lived in Nogales AZ with her family near her father. He is listed as "divorced" in the 1930 census and on his death certificate. John H Ferguson died in his daughter's home on 7 Dec 1934.
