According to their youngest daughter Sarah, when she was 10 years old, she was sent out to live with the 'Cook' family as a servant. Her brothers helped run the farm, and her older sister Mary took care of the house and meals. In 1894, Lewis's daughter Martha died at the age of 27. He died in 1908 at the age of 75.
