A farmer, Lewis married Lydia Sexton in Missouri on 12 March 1854. By 1860, they had three children born there: Charles, Isaac and Viola. By 1867, they were living in Illinois, and two more children were born there; Martha and Mary. By 1872, they were living in Iowa where their youngest two children were born; Thomas and Sarah. In 1879, at the age of 25, their son Charles died, and on 4 Nov 1883, Lewis's wife Lydia died. According to their youngest daughter Sarah, when she was 10 years old, she was sent out to live with the 'Cook' family as a servant. Her brothers helped run the farm, and her older sister Mary took care of the house and meals. In 1894, Lewis's daughter Martha died at the age of 27. He died in 1908 at the age of 75.
